Just as diverse as the fascinating spectrum of professional backgrounds of the 20 “high level experts”, was the thematically multifaceted composition of this years Ukraine Programme: the 3-week visit of the Ukrainians enabled not only first glimpses into the duties and actvities of the Federal Foreign Office, but also, through a broadly-disciplined range of seminars, room for exciting discussions on various topics like bilateral relations with Ukraine or European security, migration, environmental, or economic policy.

As the 17 participants of the 35th International Executive Seminar for German-speaking diplomats from Asia, Africa, Latin America and Europe came to Berlin in the beginning of February, the temperature was bitterly cold. However, in the course of the nine-week programme, spring soon arrived and the group of young foreign diplomats also began to thaw. They participated with great vigour in the interactive seminars on negotiation training, conflict mediation, public speaking for diplomats and in the debates at the European Academy Berlin and the German Council on Foreign Relations. Just as engaged, they debated with the professors for the seminars on history, state and international law, international economic policy and diplomatic reporting, as well as international protocol. The geographical diversity of the countries of origin made it possible for them, in addition to getting to know the German perspective, to have a fruitful exchange of views above and beyond country borders.

The intensive programme these young diplomats are undertaking is run under the auspices of the Federal Foreign Office’s Training for International Diplomats. Their timetable includes rhetoric seminars, lectures on foreign policy, exchange with non-governmental organizations, trips to German and other European cities, and a German language course. They put what they learn into practice using role-play and simulated situations.
